Ferrucci Earns Podium Finish at XPEL Grand Prix in Memorable Tribute
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – Santino Ferrucci claimed a third-place finish at the XPEL Grand Prix on Sunday, a result marked by emotional significance as he dedicated the performance to Marlene Sexton, who passed away on June 11 at the age of 86. The driver from A.J. Foyt Racing sported a tribute livery from Sexton Properties, aiming to honor her legacy throughout the race weekend.
Ferrucci’s race began with a challenging 18th-place qualifying position, necessitating an aggressive strategy to salvage a respectable outcome in the hot weather at Road America. The race unfolded with three early cautions, allowing strategies to diversify across the field. Ferrucci executed his pivotal pit stop on lap 24, switching from primary to alternate tires, which he maintained for the remainder of the race, paralleling the strategy of race winner Alex Palou.
As the race progressed, Ferrucci climbed the ranks, overtaking competitors on differing strategies. He capitalized on fuel miscalculations from Scott Dixon and Alexander Rossi, who were forced to pit in the closing laps. This opportunism propelled Ferrucci into third place, where he had to focus intently on fuel management to finish the race.
In a post-race interview, Ferrucci conveyed the intensity of the final laps: “They were counting down the laps, and I told Mike, ‘I’ve gotta focus, because this is getting stressful.’” Despite a stall during a pit stop, Ferrucci maintained composure and secured the podium finish.
After crossing the line, Ferrucci celebrated by engaging with fans, humorously requesting a drink. He remarked, “This one goes to Marlene. She was riding with us today. I’m very proud. This one tastes a little bit sweeter.”
This result has further solidified Ferrucci’s resurgence, as he has now achieved four consecutive top-five finishes, including two podiums, since May’s Indianapolis 500. Commenting on the team’s progress, Ferrucci stated, “We’re performing… I feel it. I’ve gotta get my qualifying performance up, but until then I like padding my points for passing.”
Ferrucci’s competitive drive and strategic adaptability are positioning A.J. Foyt Racing back into contention as they continue the season.
