Peter Auto has officially announced the upcoming "Legends Of Le Mans" series, set to debut as part of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in April 2025. This new initiative focuses on historic endurance racing, featuring LMP1 cars from 2006 to 2012, LMP2s from 2006 to 2016, and GTEs from 2011 to 2015. The venues for the races will include Imola, Spa, Bahrain, and the annual Le Mans Classic.
Series Structure and Objectives
The series aims to bridge classic racing with modern motorsport. Competitors will partake in a comprehensive format that includes two 30-minute practice sessions, two 30-minute qualifying sessions, and two 40-minute races per event. The grid is expected to accommodate up to 34 cars: ideally, 14 LMP1 vehicles, and 10 each from LMP2 and GTE categories.
Marc Ouayoun, General Director of Peter Auto, emphasized the series’ goals: “This project has been years in the making. The aim is to connect classic racing with the FIA WEC in an attractive format for slightly newer cars.” A rigorous selection process will ensure a stable field of participants, enhancing consistency across events.
Hearing the Roar of Engines
One of the series’ key appeals is its commitment to preserving the sound and performance characteristics of historic race cars. Ouayoun noted, “You should hear a beautiful sound. We will have some hybrids and diesels, but especially for the GTE cars, spectacular sounds that we all loved a few years ago.”
BoP and Series Governance
To promote competitive balance, a simplified Balance of Performance (BoP) system will be implemented, managed in collaboration with the ACO (Automobile Club de l’Ouest). The series is designed to prioritize track time for competitors while ensuring that amateur drivers—denoted as "gentlemen drivers"—form the primary participant base, limiting eligibility for professional racers.
Invitation and Membership
A member-based entry system will be established, ensuring exclusivity and commitment from participants. Interested teams will undergo a vetting process, with questions about their race cars and intentions, before being placed on a waiting list for membership.
Conclusion
As the motorsports community eagerly anticipates its launch, the "Legends Of Le Mans" promises to invigorate the historic racing sector and provide fans with thrilling competition and nostalgic automotive experiences. Further details will be released as the first race approaches.
