IndyCar Weekend at Iowa Speedway Faces Weather Delays
The highly anticipated doubleheader weekend for IndyCar at Iowa Speedway commenced with weather challenges, as rain and tornado warnings postponed practice sessions originally scheduled for Friday. The series announced that practice would remain on hold due to adverse conditions, prompting a revised schedule for Saturday.
The first practice session was set for 2:35 p.m. CT, focusing on the high line of the 0.894-mile oval to enhance racing conditions for the upcoming events. However, severe weather forced a delay and ultimately the cancellation of on-track activities for the day.
A tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service at 2:28 p.m. led to safety protocols, with personnel seeking shelter in the more secure facilities at the venue. The warning expired at 3:15 p.m., but a tornado watch remains in effect until 8:00 p.m.
The updated schedule for Saturday includes a practice session at 9:00 a.m. CT, followed by qualifying at 12:30 p.m. The Synk 275, a staple event covering 275 laps (245 miles), is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
Heading into the weekend, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou leads the series with six wins and 430 points, followed by Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global, who has three wins and 317 points. Notably, Palou’s teammate Scott Dixon secured victory at the last event in Mid-Ohio, taking advantage of a rare error from Palou.
The Iowa doubleheader marks races 11 and 12 of the 2025 season. Expectations are high for performance dynamics, as Honda has clinched victory in all events thus far, while Chevrolet seeks a return to competitive form at a track where it has dominated historically in the past nine races.
Teams and drivers will be looking to adapt quickly as they prepare for a busy Saturday on the newly revised schedule.
