MXGP Loket Round Report: Coenen Claims Victory Amidst Febvre’s Struggles
Loket, Czech Republic – Lucas Coenen delivered a commanding performance at the Loket circuit, securing his 14th career Grand Prix victory with a 1-2 finish, consolidating his lead in the MXGP World Championship. Romain Febvre, despite a strong effort, encountered significant challenges that caused a shift in the championship dynamics.
In the morning Warm-Up, Coenen signaled his intent, posting the fastest lap and edging out Febvre. The race began with Coenen executing a perfect Fox Holeshot, narrowly ahead of Jan Pancar, while Isak Gifting created friction for Febvre in the early laps. Coenen quickly established a nine-second lead, showcasing his dominance.
Febvre, who was initially mired behind Gifting, managed to secure third by lap four but faced a critical error midway through the race. After overtaking Gifting, he crashed in a banked corner, allowing Ruben Fernandez, Pancar, and Glenn Coldenhoff to capitalize, finishing the first race in second through fourth, respectively, while Febvre settled for fifth, conceding nine points to Coenen.
The second race commenced with Febvre’s strong start, narrowly losing the Fox Holeshot to Coldenhoff. Insistent on regaining his momentum, he fought hard to maintain his position but battled mid-race incidents involving Renaux and Van Doninck, which momentarily halted Fernandez’s charge. Despite challenges, Coenen could not capitalize on the chaos, remaining behind Coldenhoff for a significant portion of the race.
Pancar faced mechanical issues, dropping to 16th, while Fernandez showcased remarkable recovery, finishing seventh despite the early race struggle. Gifting placed fifth overall, marking a productive return after time away.
Ultimately, Coenen managed to close the gap on Febvre to just 2.5 seconds, reinforcing his competitive edge. Coldenhoff’s third in the second race marked his first podium at Loket after a dozen attempts, enhancing his standing to third in the championship, 43 points ahead of Fernandez.
As the championship stakes heighten, the competitors now shift their focus to Coenen’s home GP at Lommel, a venue where Febvre has previously triumphed. With the championship gap narrowed to ten points, the stage is set for an intense clash in the upcoming rounds.
