Porsche Penske Motorsport Poised for IMSA GTP Double Championship at Road America
As the Motul SportsCar Grand Prix approaches at Road America, Porsche Penske Motorsport is on the verge of securing consecutive IMSA GTP championships. With four consecutive wins to start the season, the factory Porsche 963s are leading the standings with only a slim margin of 12 points between teammates Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet in the No. 6 car, and their rivals, Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy, in the No. 7.
The disparity in points highlights Porsche’s dominance, as the next closest competitor trails by a substantial 250 points in both drivers’ and teams’ championships. Campbell expressed anticipation for upcoming intra-team battles, stating, "It’ll definitely be coming down to the wire at Petit (Le Mans). Hopefully, we can go into Petit with a little points gap over third, and we can just fight between the two cars."
Nasr echoed a similar sentiment, emphasizing the priority of team and manufacturer championships while aiming to expand the gap over competitors. "Car No. 7 has been strong all year long," he noted, reflecting on their consistent performance despite setbacks.
Acura poses a potential threat to Porsche’s clean sweep, having gained momentum with back-to-back wins at Detroit and Watkins Glen, closing the gap in the manufacturers’ championship to 90 points. However, the likelihood of a Porsche-controlled 1-2 finish in the standings remains high.
Urs Kuratle, Porsche’s LMDh factory director, affirmed that there would be no team orders in play as long as the battle remains tight. "We all love racing. It should be close, and it has to be close for the fans and for the sport," he stated, reinforcing the expectation of a competitive yet clean rivalry between the two teams.
With just three races remaining, the outcome remains uncertain. However, Porsche Penske Motorsport is well-positioned to clinch championships, provided they navigate the upcoming challenges effectively.
