Henry’s Legacy and the Upcoming Yamaha Budds Creek National Finals
Doug Henry, a trailblazer in motocross history, made a remarkable return in 1996 after overcoming severe injuries, joining Factory Yamaha. His comeback culminated in a podium finish at his home race, the Southwick National. In 1997, Henry showcased his prowess by securing three Supercross victories and transitioned to a groundbreaking role in 1998 as the first full-time competitor on a four-stroke motorcycle. He notably won the 1997 Las Vegas Supercross aboard Yamaha’s prototype 400cc model, further solidifying his status by clinching the 250cc Pro Motocross title in 1998 with five wins.
Henry retired from full-time racing after the 1999 season but continued to participate in select Pro Motocross Nationals until 2006. His versatility extended to snowmobiles and mountain biking, alongside a Grand National Cross-Country Racing victory in 2005. As a Factory Yamaha rider in the AMA Supermoto Championship, Henry earned an X Games Gold Medal in 2005. Unfortunately, a devastating crash in 2007 left him paralyzed from the waist down, yet he maintained his commitment to racing, excelling in adaptive sports and earning multiple X Games medals in adaptive SnoCross and Snow BikeCross. In 2005, he was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
As the 28th and final round of the SMX World Championship Regular Season approaches, the Yamaha Budds Creek National Finals will take place on August 23 at Budds Creek Motocross Park in Mechanicsville, Maryland. Tickets are available at www.ProMotocross.com.
