Heinrich Tests Porsche Penske Motorsport’s 963 Ahead of Potential Transition
Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta – AO Racing’s Laurin Heinrich had the opportunity to test a Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, a moment that resonated deeply with him as it marked a full-circle moment in his career. The 2024 IMSA GTD PRO champion reflected on how the venue was where he drove his first laps in the United States three years prior.
“It’s quite emotional… driving a top-class prototype with the factory team for the first time,” Heinrich stated. Despite having no previous prototype experience, he expressed satisfaction with his performance during the test.
However, his successful debut comes shortly after Porsche Penske Motorsport announced its withdrawal from the World Endurance Championship (WEC), complicating Heinrich’s path toward a potential move into the GTP category. Heinrich acknowledged the fluidity of the current driver market, stating, “I’d just say I’m open-minded. I don’t know yet what I will race next year. I can only influence what I can influence, which means the upcoming races.”
This uncertainty casts a shadow over his future with AO Racing, particularly as he gears up for the Petit Le Mans, which may prove to be his last race with the team’s car, affectionately known as “Rexy.” Heinrich shared an emotional reflection on his time with AO Racing, recalling his journey since the inception of their GTD PRO program. “I could prove myself… for my whole career I could develop myself – which I’m forever thankful for,” he said.
As he prepares for potentially significant changes ahead, Heinrich expressed hope that “in a decade or two, we will look back at Rexy, hopefully like a Rothmans car or a Pink Pig.” Through a mix of nostalgia and ambition, Heinrich looks toward the future while honoring a pivotal chapter in his burgeoning racing career.
