Riders Union Discussions Emphasize Need for Health Insurance Improvements in Motocross
In a recent discussion regarding the establishment of a riders’ union in motocross, veteran racer Phil highlighted ongoing conversations among riders but noted a lack of tangible progress. While the idea of unionization has been entertained, Phil emphasized the necessity for distinct representation—both for riders and manufacturers—in order to address contractual and health issues effectively.
Phil stated, “There would need to be two separate unions: one for manufacturers with Feld Motor Sports and MX Sports, and another for riders in collaboration with teams.” He pointed out that current contracts bind riders to teams rather than promoters, complicating the pursuit of collective bargaining.
A critical concern raised by Phil is the inadequacy of existing health insurance for riders. Although Feld/MX Sports does offer a type of health insurance covering up to $50,000 for emergency medical situations, Phil asserted, “$50,000 isn’t sufficient given the costs associated with healthcare in the USA, particularly for serious injuries requiring surgery.” He expressed frustration with the logistical challenges of coordinating this insurance with riders’ personal policies and underscored the urgency for reform in this area.
Phil advocated for a pragmatic approach to improve riders’ health insurance and indicated a belief that small, strategic changes could enhance the safety net for competitors.

Phil emphasized, “I do feel there is a way to make that work… there is a certain time and place to make small changes like this.”
The ongoing dialogue around a riders’ union reflects a broader need for improved advocacy and support systems within the sport, particularly in the realm of health and safety for athletes.
