Colton Herta Joins Hitech for 2026 Formula 2 Season
Summary: Colton Herta, the American IndyCar driver, is set to race for Hitech in the 2026 Formula 2 season, marking his return to European motorsport. This strategic move aims to bolster his chances of securing a future seat in Formula 1, where he seeks to establish himself amidst the competitive single-seater landscape.
After weeks of speculation, the announcement confirms Herta’s transition to F2, despite criticism that IndyCar lacks sufficient Super License points for direct F1 advancement. Herta remarked, “It does seem that F2 would give me a better chance of success compared to jumping straight from IndyCar,” emphasizing the advantages of gaining experience in a series where recent F1 recruits have thrived.
Herta’s desire for continuous competitive racing was crucial in his decision. “I really wanted to be able to race against other talented drivers,” he stated, highlighting the importance of staying active rather than merely serving as a test driver.
The decision, however, was not made lightly. Initiated mid-IndyCar season, Herta discussed the opportunity with Dan Towriss, leading to a commitment that he regards as a critical step toward his F1 aspirations. “At my age (25), this was really the last strong shot I was going to have,” he said.
Joining Hitech, currently contending for both the drivers’ and teams’ championships, Herta noted important logistical benefits of being based near Cadillic’s Silverstone workshop. Furthermore, he praised the team’s engineering capabilities: “The engineering staff… have been standouts… they’re able to compete at the front and compete for wins and championships.”
Testing begins later this year, with Herta on track to earn the necessary Super License points. His alignment with Hitech and Cadillac places him at a pivotal moment in American motorsport, “It’s an honor,” he said. “I know Cadillac is very invested in the program.”
Herta recognizes the significance of his role, stating, “For me to be fast is critical,” as he aims to represent American talent on the global stage. The forthcoming season will be a defining opportunity for Herta as he pursues success in F2, with aspirations of eventually competing at the F1 level.
