Major Rule Changes for AMA Professional Licenses and Race Restart Procedures
The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has announced significant changes to the rulebook set to take effect in 2026, notably impacting rider licensing and race restart protocols.
Starting 2026, all riders must be at least 17 years old to obtain a professional AMA Motorcyclist License, except for those already grandfathered in, such as those turning pro at 16 in 2025. This adjustment emphasizes a commitment to rider maturity and responsibility.
Another critical change pertains to red flag procedures. Under the revised rules, when a race is stopped with less than one minute remaining on the clock, it will now be deemed complete rather than restarting. This rule aims to prevent controversies like the one witnessed during the 250SX main event in Detroit earlier this year.
In that race, a severe incident involving Cameron McAdoo led to a red flag with just seven seconds remaining. The subsequent staggered restart allowed Levi Kitchen to capitalize on Max Anstie’s previously commanding lead, resulting in Kitchen’s unexpected victory. Following the race, Kitchen acknowledged the circumstances surrounding his win, while Anstie expressed frustration over losing the lead.
Under the new rules, that same race would have concluded after the red flag, officially designating Anstie as the winner. The new rule aims to enhance race integrity and prevent last-minute upheavals.
These modifications reflect the AMA’s proactive approach to safety and fairness in competitive racing environments. Further updates and reactions from industry stakeholders are expected as these changes approach implementation.
