Ferrari Faces Strong Competition in 2026 WEC Season Opener
Ferrari begins the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season at Imola, defending its title as the reigning Hypercar World Champion. The team’s trio of 499Ps have showcased competitive pace during the Prologue and Friday’s practice sessions, although significant upgrades from competing manufacturers raise questions about their overall performance.
In the opening Free Practice 1 (FP1), Ferrari’s cars maintained their pre-season momentum, but by FP2, Alpine surged to the top of the time sheets. While Ferrari management, including Antonello Coletta, cautioned against overconfidence, underscoring the importance of “maintaining competitive compatibility,” there remains uncertainty surrounding the car’s race pace against upgraded rivals.
Driver Alessandro Pier Guidi emphasized the unpredictability of qualifying outcomes, noting that the performance of others varies widely. “It’s better to be quick, but it means nothing,” he stated, highlighting a lack of data on competitor programs, particularly regarding tire performance with the new compound introduced this year.
Ferdinando Cannizzo, head of endurance race cars, acknowledged that Ferrari has focused on minor aerodynamic adjustments to comply with FIA regulations rather than undertaking major car redesigns. He stated, “We could have changed the car completely, but that was not in our scope for this season,” indicating a cautious strategy as the team assesses the necessity of a Joker update for future seasons.
As the race approaches, the significance of qualifying becomes a focal point, with Imola’s challenging layout making overtaking difficult. Coletta reiterated the importance of a strong starting position, recalling how the #51 car secured pole but the #50 experienced setbacks in last year’s race, ultimately finishing 15th after a series of misfortunes.
With qualifying underway, the Ferrari team remains committed to optimizing their strategy, setting the stage for what is poised to be a closely contested season opener.
