Silverstone: Hugo Cook Tops British GT Free Practice Session
Hugo Cook, the reigning vice-champion, clocked the fastest time in the first free practice session of the 2026 British GT Championship at Silverstone. Driving the #63 Barwell Motorsport Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2, Cook set a lap of 1:57.908, placing him ahead of competitors from 2 Seas Motorsport, including Ben Green in the #18 Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO, who recorded a time of 1:58.032.
The session was temporarily halted due to a red flag when Cameron Campbell’s #13 Rodin Motorsport Ferrari 296 GT3 EVO became stranded in the gravel at Becketts Corner. Quick intervention from marshals allowed the session to resume promptly.
Technical issues plagued several teams. Mahiki Racing’s #69 McLaren 720S GT3 EVO remained largely in the garage due to minor pre-existing problems, completing just nine laps. The #15 2 Seas Mercedes-AMG, shared by Andrew Gilbert and Aaron Walker, faced electrical issues, hampering their performance. This car was a late replacement after the original chassis suffered fire damage during testing.
Kiern Jewiss secured the third fastest time in the reigning champion #1 entry at 1:58.356, followed closely by Ross Gunn in the #7 Beechdean Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3 EVO, who posted a best lap of 1:58.375. The GT3 Silver-Am class saw Jarrod Waberski’s #78 Barwell Lamborghini finish fastest with a time of 1:58.384.
In the GT4 category, Revie Lake claimed the top spot in the #84 Mahiki McLaren Artura GT4 with a lap of 2:09.422. He was followed closely by Jack Mitchell in the #42 Ginetta G56 GT4 EVO, who topped the GT4 Pro-Am class at 2:09.451.
The British GT season opener continues with pre-qualifying set to commence at 12:15 BST.
