IndyCar Implements New Tire Regulations Ahead of Sonsio Grand Prix
The IndyCar Series has officially announced the introduction of a new tire rule for the upcoming Sonsio Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, scheduled for May 10. This change mandates drivers to use both Firestone’s primary and alternate tire compounds for a minimum of two laps each, effectively doubling the previous requirement.
Under the new rule, teams must complete at least two laps on each tire compound, with one of those laps commencing after the Green Flag has been displayed. There are no restrictions on the use of new (sticker) tire sets during the race. This rule aligns with the existing framework (Rule 15.3.3.2.3) and maintains the total tire allocation of five sets of primaries and four sets of alternates for the IMS road course.
According to series officials, the intention behind this update is to enhance the fan experience by promoting a more thrilling, strategic racing environment. Doug Boles, president of IndyCar, stated, "IndyCar is continually looking into ways to improve an already extraordinary on-track product. Firestone is a terrific partner, and their higher-degradation alternate tire has given strategists plenty to think about on road and street circuits this year. We expect this update will challenge teams and drivers even more."
Despite the push for this regulation, an informal poll conducted among team owners indicated that 70% were opposed to the double-use rule when it was initially proposed. This decision marks a significant shift in the series’ approach to tire strategy, aimed at heightening competition and viewer engagement in North America’s premier open-wheel racing series.
