Palou Dominates at Barber Motorsports Park
BIRMINGHAM, AL — Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing delivered a commanding performance at the Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix, securing his third victory of the season. Palou, who started from pole position, completed the race over 15 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, demonstrating exceptional racecraft across the caution-free event.
Palou’s dominance was evident from the race’s outset. "It was the perfect day," he remarked post-race. "The car was amazing—super fast, and I just had a ton of fun." This victory marks Palou’s second win at Barber Motorsports Park, the first occurring four years prior.
The absence of yellow flags contributed to uninterrupted race conditions, allowing teams to focus on tire strategy. Palou’s colleagues faced a dilemma: whether to deploy primary tires early for longevity or to save them for later laps. Many drivers, including Alexander Rossi (#20), Kyle Kirkwood (#27), and Christian Rasmussen (#21), opted for late deployment of primaries, which ultimately hindered their performance. Rossi reflected on the challenge: "It was a lot of work to keep [Nolan Siegel and Joseph Newgarden] behind, but the team called a great race."
As teams prepare for next weekend’s Sonsio Grand Prix in Indianapolis, they will be required to use both primary and alternate tire compounds, further introducing strategic complexities. Qualifying will take place on Friday, May 9, at 4:30 PM EDT, with the race set for Sunday at the same time.
