Ferrari’s Strategy Under Scrutiny at Miami Grand Prix
Frederic Vasseur, Team Principal of Ferrari, has come under scrutiny following the Miami Grand Prix’s controversial team orders involving drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. The team opted to swap the positions of the two drivers mid-race, allowing Hamilton to attempt a charge on Andrea Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes, who was in sixth place.
Despite initially cutting the gap to Antonelli, Hamilton failed to capitalize, leading Ferrari to revert Leclerc back into seventh. The decision to shuffle positions drew frustration from both drivers, with Hamilton voicing disappointment over the slow decision-making and Leclerc expressing concerns over the implications for teammate Carlos Sainz.
Vasseur defended the team’s strategy, asserting that the swap was aligned with Ferrari’s policy and aimed at optimizing race performance. “We have a general policy and we follow the policy,” he stated. “It was about understanding if the car behind was genuinely faster or merely benefitting from DRS assistance.”
In the aftermath, Vasseur admitted to discussing the frustrations with Hamilton, acknowledging the competitive nature of both drivers. “They are champions. They want to win," he remarked. “Asking them to let their teammates go is never easy.”
He emphasized the team’s responsibility to make informed decisions based on current race conditions. He also noted that delays in radio communications could have exacerbated perceptions of the team’s responsiveness. “Radio transmissions are managed by FOM, sometimes leading to delays in information being relayed to the drivers,” he explained.
Vasseur concluded that while hindsight offers the benefit of clarity, the decisions made in real-time were sound under the circumstances. “Honestly, I think as a team, we did a good job,” he affirmed, reinforcing the team’s commitment to data-driven strategy amid the pressures of high-stakes competition.
As Ferrari moves forward, the team’s tactical choices and the effectiveness of their communication will remain focal points in their pursuit of success in the ongoing championship season.
