Colton Herta Faces Early Challenges in Indy 500 Qualifying But Secures Spot
Indianapolis, IN – Colton Herta, driving the No. 26 Andretti Global Honda, experienced a harrowing moment during Indy 500 qualifying when he crashed on his first flying lap, overturning in turn one. The incident occurred at approximately 12:05 PM EST, resulting in a total loss of the vehicle.
Despite the setback and IndyCar regulations restricting the availability of backup cars, Herta’s pit crew, led by crew chief Nick Allen, managed an impressive turnaround. They reassembled a new car in just over four hours, allowing Herta to return to the track for additional qualifying attempts.
Herta clocked in at 230.192 mph, securing the 29th position for the upcoming race. "It sucks," he remarked post-qualifying. "We want to be in the Fast 12, not just making the show. It’s disappointing to miss that opportunity."
Herta commended his team’s effort, stating, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like that… to have a car that not only runs but is safe, the balance is right, in that amount of time, I don’t even know what to say."
When asked about his qualifying run in an unknown car, Herta expressed cautious optimism: "At some point, I felt the car was good enough to get into the race… You just hope that everyone did their job."
Herta displayed remarkable mental fortitude, affirming that the crash did not intimidate him. "This place doesn’t scare me… I have a lot of trust in my team and my engineer," he added, emphasizing his confidence in their setup and safety measures.
With qualifying completed, eyes will now turn to the 109th Indianapolis 500, where Herta aims to capitalize on the grit and determination demonstrated by his team.
