Post-Race Technical Inspections at Indy 500 Lead to Major Penalties
In a dramatic turn of events following the 109th Indy 500, three cars have been disqualified due to violations discovered in post-race technical inspections. IndyCar announced on Monday that Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood (No. 27) and Marcus Ericsson (No. 28), along with Prema Racing’s Callum Ilott (No. 90), will face significant penalties as a result of their infractions.
The two Andretti Global entries were found to have unauthorized modifications to their Dallara-supplied Energy Management System (EMS) components, specifically concerning the mounting points and use of unapproved spacers. These changes reportedly enhanced the aerodynamic efficiency of both cars, violating the series regulations.
Ilott’s No. 90 entry failed to meet mechanical specifications as well, with the front wing not conforming to required endplate height and location metrics.
As a consequence of these violations, all three entries have been relegated in the official race standings—Ericsson from 2nd to 31st, Kirkwood from 6th to 32nd, and Ilott from 13th to 33rd. Each will incur a $100,000 fine, and the respective teams’ managers are suspended for one race, effective during the upcoming event in Detroit.
Neither Andretti Global nor Prema Racing has issued a formal statement regarding the penalties at this time. Further updates will follow as the situation develops.
