In a significant shakeup within its leadership, Red Bull Racing has announced the exit of Christian Horner, who has led the team for two decades. Laurent Mekies has been appointed as team principal, succeeding Horner, while Racing Bulls’ racing director Alan Permane will take on the team principal role for the Anglo-Italian squad.

Permane, a seasoned figure with over three decades of experience in Formula 1, previously served as engine engineer and sporting director at teams including Benetton, Renault, and most recently, Alpine. His extensive track record includes leading technical teams to success and managing a substantial workforce, making him well-equipped for the challenges ahead.

"I had many reactions to the news, some shock, some pride," Permane stated in an exclusive interview. "It’s amazing that they feel I’m capable to lead this team. I want to thank Red Bull senior management and Laurent for his belief in me."

With just weeks to prepare before the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix, Permane aims to build on the strong foundation laid by Mekies and team CEO Peter Bayer. “The target is to be top of the midfield, and we are certainly in a battle for that,” he asserted, aiming to maintain the team’s upward trajectory.

Permane acknowledged the increased demands of the role, now overseeing a workforce exceeding 700 at facilities in Milton Keynes and Faenza. “As a sporting director, you manage a smaller team. It’s a larger role, but I’m ready and confident to take it on,” he added.

Racing Bulls plans to keep its existing structure without immediate replacement for the racing director role. Chief race engineer Mattia Spini will assume additional responsibilities as Permane gradually shifts focus to operations at both factories.

In light of this leadership transition, Permane expressed gratitude for the support he has received from fellow team principals, including Sauber’s Jonathan Wheatley, with whom he shares a longstanding friendship from their days at Benetton.

Permane concluded, “I’ve been more of a technical or sporting guy, but now relishing this new challenge—it’s going to be a great journey.”

As Red Bull Racing prepares for the next chapter, all eyes will be on how these leadership changes affect performance on the track.
