Alonso Excluded from Practice at Hungarian Grand Prix Due to Back Injury
Fernando Alonso will miss the opening practice session of the Hungarian Grand Prix as he continues treatment for a back injury sustained after the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. The Aston Martin team confirmed that Alonso has been “managing a muscular injury,” leading to the decision for him to sit out FP1.
Felipe Drugovich, Alonso’s reserve driver and the 2022 Formula 2 champion, stepped in for the Spaniard during the session. Aston Martin has indicated that a decision regarding Alonso’s participation in FP2 and the rest of the weekend will be made in due course, emphasizing that he can delay his return up to qualifying if necessary.
Last weekend in Belgium, Alonso finished 17th, marking a disappointing performance for the team, which ended a streak of four consecutive races where he scored points. Drugovich, while yet to make his official F1 debut, has been with Aston Martin in a reserve capacity since the conclusion of the last Formula 2 season.
