Alpine Considers Driver Change Ahead of Imola Grand Prix

As Alpine F1 faces mounting pressure following a challenging start to the season, the team is actively contemplating a driver change. Sources indicate that reserve driver Franco Colapinto may replace Jack Doohan for the upcoming Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola.

Doohan’s campaign has been marred by inconsistent performances and incidents, most notably a collision with Liam Lawson at the Miami Grand Prix that prematurely ended his race. Although he displayed promising one-lap speed, including outqualifying teammate Pierre Gasly, his overall results have failed to meet expectations. With only one points finish from Gasly and Alpine sitting ninth in the Constructors’ Championship, the team may be forced to rethink their lineup.

Alpine’s management and CEO Horacio Marin previously hinted at Colapinto’s potential entry, amplifying speculation around Doohan’s position. Team principal Oliver Oakes addressed these rumors, reaffirming Doohan’s current status but acknowledging ongoing evaluations of the team’s driver roster.

“Jack is our driver as it is today,” Oakes stated, while emphasizing the continuous assessment of performance. Given that the Imola race is the first in a crucial triple-header alongside Monaco and Barcelona, a timely decision would be strategically advantageous.

Colapinto, who joined Alpine’s reserve roster over the offseason, is well-prepared for a potential race seat due to extensive simulation work and prior testing experience. He made a strong impression during a nine-race stint with Williams, where he scored points in two races, though his tenure also included notable mishaps.

Alpine advisor Flavio Briatore is reportedly supportive of promoting Colapinto sooner rather than later, especially considering his backing from sponsors in Argentina. As Alpine seeks to recover from a slow start, the upcoming weeks may prove pivotal for both Doohan and Colapinto as the team weighs its options in pursuit of greater competitive stability.
