F1 Broadcast Rights: Apple and ESPN Lead Contenders in U.S. Market
As Formula 1 seeks new broadcast partners in the United States, Apple and ESPN emerge as the leading contenders, according to industry sources. The interest from Apple has intensified following the recent box office success of the F1 film featuring Brad Pitt, which has grossed over $300 million worldwide.
ESPN, the current rights holder since 2018, maintains a strong interest in retaining the rights. The network has recorded an average viewership of 1.3 million per race this season, reflecting a 7% increase from the previous year. Despite an expired exclusivity period earlier this year, ESPN continues to draw a growing audience across its platforms, including ABC and ESPN2.
Negotiations also involve streaming giants Netflix and Amazon, who have expressed interest in sports rights. Apple’s foray into live sports includes partnerships with Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer, reinforcing its position in the competitive bidding landscape.
Current broadcast rights are set to expire at the end of this year, with discussions anticipated to evolve further in the coming months, as interested parties assess the film’s influence on audience engagement and demographics ahead of the 2026 season.
