Audi Targets Championship Contention in Formula 1 by 2030

Munich, Germany – Audi is poised to make its Formula 1 debut in 2024, with ambitious aspirations of contending for world championships by 2030. The company is developing its own power unit in Germany while taking over the Swiss-based Sauber for chassis construction, supplemented by a technology office in the UK.

“Motorsport is part of the Audi DNA and has always driven technological progress and innovation,” stated Audi CEO Gernot Dollner during the unveiling of the team’s brand identity. “We are not entering Formula 1 just to participate; we intend to win.”

Mattia Binotto, head of the Audi F1 project and former Ferrari team principal, emphasized the need for strategic patience. “The goal is clear: to fight for championships by 2030. This journey involves the right people and a mindset of continuous improvement,” Binotto remarked.

To achieve its aspirations, Audi will employ a three-phased approach: starting as a challenger, evolving into a competitor, and ultimately becoming a champion. “Formula 1 is one of the most competitive environments, where mistakes are part of the learning process,” added Binotto.

The team’s first F1 car is scheduled to hit the track early next year. Binotto noted that the timeline to success is not just ambitious but rooted in a thorough analysis of the time required to build a competitive foundation in the sport.

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Binotto described the 2030 target as realistic, supported by extensive internal discussions. “Five years is ambitious but achievable. It provides us three years to build and two to consolidate,” he stated, underscoring the organization’s commitment to quickly optimizing performance.

With drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto confirmed, Audi enters F1 with a clear vision and structured plan, establishing itself as a significant player in the sport’s future landscape.
