Ollie Bearman Faces Suspension Risk Following Collision at Italian Grand Prix
Ollie Bearman, the Haas rookie, is on the brink of an automatic race ban after a collision with Carlos Sainz during the Italian Grand Prix. The incident occurred as Bearman attempted to defend his position at the Roggia chicane (Turns 4 and 5). As Sainz overtook on the outside, Bearman, unable to maintain a tight line, made contact with the Ferrari, leading to both cars spinning off track.
Following the race, the stewards issued Bearman a 10-second time penalty and assessed two penalty points. This brings his total to 10 within the 12-month period, with the first points not expiring until after the Mexico City Grand Prix. Bearman now has four upcoming races—Baku, Singapore, Austin, and Mexico City—to navigate without incurring additional penalties, as two more would lead to a suspension.
The stewards ruled that Sainz had established his position before the apex, thereby earning the right to the racing line. The report stated, “The driver of Car No. 87 [Bearman] defended his position on the inside instead of giving up the position and caused the collision.”
Currently, Ryo Hirakawa is the designated reserve driver for Haas, although the team may consider Ferrari reserves Zhou Guanyu and Antonio Giovinazzi if needed. Bearman now sits as the closest driver to a race ban, with Max Verstappen one point behind, adding tension to their upcoming races.
