FIA Election Dynamics: Ben Sulayem Responds to Mayer’s Criticism
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem addressed recent criticisms from presidential candidate Tim Mayer, who described his leadership as a “reign of terror.” Mayer’s campaign, launched ahead of the British Grand Prix, aims to challenge Ben Sulayem in the upcoming elections scheduled for December.
Mayer emphasized that the FIA staff "deserve leadership that provides them with tools, a vision, and resources," arguing against what he perceives as a toxic work environment. In response, Ben Sulayem dismissed Mayer’s comments, labeling him as "disconnected" from the governing body. “Whoever is saying this… they are disconnected with the FIA,” Ben Sulayem stated to Reuters, recommending that Mayer engage directly with staff to gain a clearer understanding of the organization’s atmosphere.
In a separate quote to the Press Association, Ben Sulayem asserted that he enjoys strong backing from member clubs, emphasizing that their votes will ultimately decide his fate in the election. “It’s about the members. They have the power to get me out,” he remarked, indicating confidence in his leadership and commitment to member interests.
As the election approaches, the tension between the current president and his challenger highlights ongoing divisions within the FIA, raising questions about leadership style and organizational culture.
