Alpine Announces Driver Change Ahead of Emilia Romagna GP
Alpine F1 Team has officially confirmed that Franco Colapinto will replace Jack Doohan as the team’s second driver for at least the next five races, starting at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. This decision follows a review of the opening rounds of the 2025 season, where Doohan failed to score any points.
Colapinto, who was signed as a reserve driver during the winter, has been described by Williams team principal James Vowles as "on loan," with an expectation of eventual race participation. Executive Director Flavio Briatore stated, “With the field being so closely matched this year, and with a competitive car, we see the need to rotate our line-up.” He emphasized the importance of a thorough driver evaluation ahead of the pivotal 2026 season.
Doohan’s performance included seven starts, with his best result a recent outqualifying of teammate Pierre Gasly. However, Gasly has accumulated points in one grand prix and a Sprint event, contributing to Alpine’s total of seven points and placing the team ninth in the constructors’ standings.
The upcoming five races will provide a crucial opportunity for Colapinto to showcase his abilities, especially as he prepares for consecutive races at Silverstone and the Austrian Grand Prix. “I want to thank the team for this opportunity,” Colapinto affirmed. “I will work hard to prepare and deliver the best results alongside Pierre.”
This announcement comes on the heels of team principal Oliver Oakes’ unexpected resignation, with Briatore stepping in to manage team operations. The forthcoming races will test Alpine’s strategy and driver dynamics as they aim to improve their championship standing.
