RB21 Development Strategy Aims for Future Gains, As Verstappen Climbs Championship Standings
Red Bull Racing’s team principal, Laurent Mekies, asserts that the ongoing development of the RB21, despite its challenges this season, is a strategic investment for the team’s future, particularly with an eye on the 2026 regulations.
At the recent Mexico City Grand Prix, Red Bull introduced additional updates to the RB21, closely contesting for second place in the Constructors’ Championship while Max Verstappen made significant gains in the Drivers’ standings. Despite pressure to shift focus entirely to their 2026 car, Mekies emphasizes the importance of maximizing the current vehicle’s potential.
“By continuing to develop the RB21, we aim to understand our weaknesses and build confidence in our methodologies for 2026,” said Mekies. He noted that giving up on the current car mid-season could lead to uncertainty and unrealistic expectations heading into the next regulatory cycle. “If we were to walk away from this car feeling unsatisfied, it would compromise our future,” he added.
Verstappen remains in pursuit of the championship, narrowing the gap to the leader by 36 points at the Mexico Grand Prix, even though he was bested by Lando Norris in a McLaren. Mekies reiterated that the team’s focus remains on performance rather than championship standings, stating, “Our approach won’t change based on the title picture. We are committed to extracting maximum performance, regardless of where we stand in the championship.”
Moving forward, Mekies stressed the importance of learning from each race, specifically targeting improvements for future events like the upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix. “The goal is to ensure we leave each track having maximized our performance,” he concluded.
