The Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix achieved a historic milestone on Sunday, drawing an average of 1.1 million viewers on ESPN—marking the highest audience for the event in U.S. television history, according to Nielsen data. The race commenced at 7 a.m. ET.
This year’s viewership surpasses the previous record of 970,000, established in 2021. Viewership also rose from last year’s average of 865,000, when the race was held for the first time in September.
Significantly, the broadcast attracted 420,000 viewers from the crucial 18-49 age demographic, underscoring its appeal among younger audiences.
Overall, the 2023 F1 season has been marked by robust viewer engagement, with 16 of the 17 races thus far showing year-over-year increases. Notably, 11 races—including Azerbaijan—achieved record audience figures.
Across ESPN and its networks, Formula 1 races are averaging 1.4 million viewers, surpassing the prior all-time U.S. average of 1.21 million set in 2022. This upward trend in viewership reflects the growing popularity and fan engagement with the sport.
