Russell in Aston Martin’s 2026 Plans: Insights and Current Status
George Russell is reportedly a candidate for a key role in Aston Martin’s resurgence in Formula 1, targeting the year 2026 amid sweeping regulatory changes. According to paddock sources, Aston Martin has tasked renowned designer Adrian Newey with developing a new competitive car in line with new engine and chassis regulations, positioning Russell as a notable contender to pilot it.
Currently under contract with Mercedes until the end of this season, Russell remains noncommittal in his negotiations, stating, "It doesn’t hurt. I know I’m going to be on the grid." After securing a victory in Montreal, Russell emphasized his performance and readiness to compete for a world championship, insisting, "I feel that I’m driving better than ever."
When probed about contract discussions, Russell affirmed his loyalty to Mercedes, where he seeks to continue his career, noting, "I have been quite open to say my intentions are to stay with Mercedes." He dismissed speculation about negotiations with other teams, asserting, "There haven’t been any hard feelings with any of the talks that have been going around."
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff expressed confidence in securing a new deal for Russell, indicating that while formal terms are yet to be finalized, a timeline has been agreed upon. "He’s been so long with us and he’s growing," Wolff commented on Russell’s development within the team. The atmosphere in Mercedes, according to Wolff, remains positive as they approach contract negotiations post the triple-header races in June and July.
Meanwhile, Aston Martin’s current lineup includes Fernando Alonso, whose contract extends until the end of the 2024 season, and Lance Stroll, whose future remains uncertain due to ownership complexities involving his father.
As the 2026 season approaches, the landscape of driver contracts and team strategies continues to evolve in anticipation of significant regulatory shifts in Formula 1.
