Bruno Michel’s Vision for F2 and F3: Nurturing Future F1 Stars

As the CEO of both Formula 2 (F2) and Formula 3 (F3), Bruno Michel plays a pivotal role in cultivating the next generation of Formula 1 drivers. His objective is to create competitive environments where emerging talent can thrive and prepare for the challenges of F1.

Michel highlighted the impressive influx of talent this year, with six rookies making their debut in F1. “I always felt it was a clear path, but the key question has always been the number of available seats in Formula 1,” Michel told Autosport. He emphasized that while the attractiveness of drivers fluctuates annually, the current season has set a record with more graduates from F2 entering F1 than ever before.

Among this year’s notable achievements, Gabriel Bortoleto secured the F2 title and earned a seat with Sauber, preparing to race for Audi next season. Others like Isack Hadjar and Jack Doohan are also making waves, with Hadjar particularly catching attention at Racing Bulls. Michel noted, “We can identify potential, but many factors influence a driver’s journey to F1.”

The rookie class of 2024 is characterized by standout performances from drivers like Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Oliver Bearman, both of whom have showcased their capabilities despite the pressures of entering F1. Antonelli’s pole position in Miami exemplifies his talent. “Kimi is an incredible talent,” Michel remarked, recognizing the challenge and potential of driving for a top F1 team.

Michel’s commentary on Bearman further sheds light on the high expectations for F2 graduates. “Ollie showed his potential during his stint at Ferrari and proved he is ready for F1,” he stated.

While the shift toward rookie integration has been initially cautious among F1 teams, Michel noted a change in climate. “The fact that 25% of the grid comprises rookies this year is outstanding and reflects a broader acceptance of emerging talent," he stressed.

Looking ahead, Michel remains committed to fostering an environment where young drivers can transition smoothly from F3 to F2 and eventually to F1. "Every year, we see fresh talent from F3 succeeding in F2," he concluded. With each passing season, the motorsport community keeps a keen eye on the happenings within the junior categories, eager to spot the next potential star.
