Alonso Backs Hamilton Amid Ferrari Struggles
Montreal, Canada – As Lewis Hamilton grapples with a challenging debut season at Ferrari, former McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso has publicly defended the seven-time world champion, asserting that Hamilton’s difficulties with the SF-25 are merely temporary.
With Ferrari currently trailing McLaren in the constructors’ standings, rumors about the future of team principal Fred Vasseur and the potential departure of Charles Leclerc have been circulating. However, both Vasseur and Leclerc’s associations with the team have been reaffirmed.
Alonso commented, "What’s wrong with him? I have no idea. Lewis is a great driver; on tracks like Canada, he’s capable of exploiting all his strengths. After 24 races, we’ll do the math: he’s struggling now, but he can turn things around very quickly."
Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari, a key storyline of the season, has not met expectations thus far. Currently sitting seventh in the drivers’ standings, he is 23 points behind teammate Leclerc. Despite clinching victory in the Chinese sprint race earlier this year, Hamilton has yet to secure a podium finish in any Grand Prix.
Reflecting on the comparison to teammate George Russell’s performance in prior seasons with Mercedes, Alonso noted, "I don’t think the situation has changed much compared to last year with Russell. Then, the Mercedes was apparently difficult to drive and Russell was more comfortable. This year seems to be the same."
Hamilton addressed the speculation regarding team dynamics, emphasizing his confidence in Vasseur. "I love working with Fred. He’s the main reason I’m in this team… I want Fred here. I believe he is the person to take us to the top, so that’s that. Ultimately, it’s nonsense what people have written."
As the Canadian Grand Prix approaches, Hamilton and Ferrari are focused on overcoming their current challenges in pursuit of improvement.
