Alonso Named Ambassador for Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya Amid Future Developments

Two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso has been appointed as an ambassador for Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. This strategic move aims to strengthen the circuit’s status on the F1 calendar beyond 2026, particularly following significant investments for modernization.

In his statement, Alonso expressed, “It is an honour and a privilege… [the circuit] has given us so much joy.” He emphasized the necessity of the circuit’s evolution to meet the demands of contemporary racing standards, noting, “This has brought it up to level ten, with a promising future.” Alonso reinforced the circuit’s importance, insisting that it remains on the calendar due to its rich tradition and competitive roots.

The circuit plans extensive upgrades in 2024, enhancing facilities, hospitality zones, VIP grandstands, and constructing a new pit lane. Alonso remarked on the diverse nature of tracks currently in use, particularly urban circuits in major cities and those in the Middle East. He highlighted the need to preserve historic circuits, stating, “All options must be weighed up… safety on the track must not be underestimated.”

With these developments, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya aims to ensure its relevance in the highly competitive world of Formula 1 racing.
