Formula 1: Technical Updates Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix

Ferrari and Red Bull have introduced significant upgrades to their cars in preparation for the Austrian Grand Prix, while McLaren is also modifying its suspension setup.

Ferrari’s enhancements are the most extensive this weekend, focusing on the floor’s edge, fences, and bodywork, along with adjustments to the diffuser. This upgraded floor is crucial in maximizing aerodynamic performance, a pivotal factor in this generation of Formula 1 cars. Ferrari stated, “This floor package features updated front floor fences targeting enhanced vorticity released downstream. The reshaped boat and tunnel expansion have been re-optimised, leading to an overall load gain across the car’s operating envelope.”

Lewis Hamilton commented on the potential impact of Ferrari’s new floor: “We really don’t know the actual effect that it’s going to have… Hopefully, it will be a step in the right direction, but I don’t think we’re expecting it to change a huge amount.”

Red Bull has also made strides with a new floor design, albeit less extensive, by implementing a new edge wing to enhance flow stability and loading from the floor’s rear section. “A new edge wing is being deployed intended to maintain the established flow stability and improve the load extracted from this region of the floor,” the team noted.

McLaren’s adjustments include a revised front suspension geometry alongside aerodynamic tweaks to both the front and rear corners of the car, aiming for improved synergy with the updated suspension.

Meanwhile, Mercedes has opted for limited updates, enhancing cooling capacity with larger brake ducts and an engine cover exit designed to promote airflow through the sidepod radiators.

Racing Bulls has introduced modifications to the front wing flap and rear wing profile, while Sauber’s upgrades consist of a new rear wing assembly designed for high downforce circuits, along with modifications to the floor edge and diffuser.

These updates will be critical in shaping performance outcomes as teams aim for competitive advantages in Austria.
