Ferrari Plans Dual Specification Tests Ahead of 2026 Season

Bahrain, [Date] – Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur anticipates that Formula 1 teams will debut B-spec cars during the official pre-season tests in Bahrain next year, following a crucial five-day shakedown in Barcelona scheduled for late January.

The transition to new aerodynamic and power unit regulations for the 2026 season represents a significant shift from previous designs. The initial Barcelona test is essential for evaluating reliability and validating technical configurations before the two Bahrain tests ahead of the season opener in Melbourne.

“I think yes, everybody will do it,” Vasseur stated regarding the use of B-spec cars. “The most important is to get mileage… to validate the technical choice of the car.” He expects teams to bring a “spec A” version for the Barcelona test, prioritizing reliability over instant performance.

Ferrari is set to unveil its new car on January 23, providing ample opportunity to identify critical issues before the Bahrain tests. Vasseur emphasizes the importance of accumulating mileage in Barcelona, stating, “The first focus… will be to get mileage for the car, to understand the reality of the car and where we need to improve.”

Acknowledging the shift from the recent trend of limited testing days, Vasseur noted, “It’s an advantage, but it’s also a completely different program.” He reflected on past seasons characterized by high rates of retirements, underscoring the need for thorough pre-season preparations.

Vasseur’s approach highlights the paramount goal of the upcoming tests: achieving reliability and gathering valuable data to ensure a competitive start to the 2026 season.
