FIA Updates F1 Racing Guidelines for 2025 Amid Calls for Transparency
The FIA has released the revised Formula 1 racing guidelines and penalty system for the 2025 season, responding to widespread demands for greater clarity following a series of controversial incidents in the previous year. The document, now publicly available for the first time, lays out the criteria that race stewards will use when adjudicating on-track incidents.
Key changes address overtaking maneuvers. For overtaking on the inside of a corner, the overtaking car must have its front axle at least alongside the mirror of the competing vehicle prior to the apex and must demonstrate controlled driving throughout the maneuver. The guidelines specify:
-
Inside Overtaking:
- Front axle alongside competitor before and at the apex.
- Must be executed in a controlled manner without "diving in."
- Must finish the move within track limits.
-
Outside Overtaking:
- Front axle must be ahead at the apex.
- Controlled driving from entry to exit is required.
- The maneuver must adhere to track limits.
- Chicanes and S-Bends: Priority will be given to the first corner element when applying the overtaking guidelines.
The FIA emphasized that these are guidelines and not binding regulations. Stewards will retain their discretion to assess incidents based on various factors, including the actions taken leading up to the incident and the specific corner characteristics.
In related discussions, George Russell, Mercedes driver and GPDA director, highlighted the importance of transparency, stating, "Greater transparency within the governance of our sport is an important issue and this is a useful step." He expressed hope that these updates would clarify race rules for both media and fans, aiding in understanding stewards’ decisions.
Additionally, the FIA has published new guidelines regarding the penalty system. Notably, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing is currently just one point away from incurring an automatic race ban due to penalty points, underscoring the significance of this newly disclosed information.
As the 2025 season approaches, these updates aim to foster clearer communication and understanding between the FIA, drivers, and fans alike.
