FIA Releases Updated F1 Racing Guidelines and Penalty System

The FIA has officially published its updated Formula 1 racing guidelines and penalty system, responding to demands for enhanced transparency within the sport. These revisions, informed by extensive discussions with drivers and prompted by notable incidents during the previous season, are set to take effect in 2025.

Key Changes to Overtaking Regulations

A primary focus of the updated guidelines is the handling of on-track duels. The document clarifies the conditions under which cars can expect to be given room while overtaking:

  • Inside Overtaking: A car must have its front axle at least alongside the other car’s mirror before the apex and demonstrate control throughout the maneuver.

  • Outside Overtaking: The overtaking car must have its front axle ahead of the competitor’s at the apex and maintain a controlled trajectory.

  • Chicanes and S-Bends: The guidelines apply to all elements of the combination, with priority typically assigned to the first corner.

Importantly, these guidelines are not regulations but rather serve as a framework to guide stewards in their decision-making processes during races. Factors considered in steward decisions include late braking, visibility, and track conditions.

Track Limits and Transparency

The guidelines also reiterate rules regarding track limits, aiming to mitigate confusion during races. Mercedes driver George Russell, who has been vocal about the FIA’s previous lack of clarity, commended the effort for greater transparency, stating, “This is a useful step in that direction. It will help fans and media understand the rules of engagement on track.”

Additionally, the FIA published a separate document detailing the penalty system, which has garnered attention as Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing approaches a critical point total that could lead to a race ban during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend.

As the sport evolves, these guidelines are expected to significantly impact the racing landscape, enhancing both safety and competitive fairness in the coming years.
