Andrea Kimi Antonelli Gears Up for Austrian GP After First Podium Finish

Mercedes young talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli is heading into the Austrian Grand Prix with renewed confidence following his impressive podium finish in Canada. After a disheartening crash during his debut at the Italian Grand Prix last year, Antonelli has steadily improved, culminating in a third-place result at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Reflecting on his Canadian success, Antonelli stated, “Canada was really important for me. It was a big relief… I have been close to the podium several times and finally achieving that definitely helped my confidence." His performance in Montreal marked a significant turnaround from his early struggles, including a mere 10 minutes of track time in his debut.

Team principal Toto Wolff expressed satisfaction with Antonelli’s growth, despite the initial concerns following the Monza incident. Antonelli admitted that the crash has lingered in his mind, influencing his approach in practice sessions. “I’ve perhaps been a bit too tense on some occasions and conservative in practice,” he acknowledged.

As he prepares for Austria, Antonelli emphasizes the importance of refining his qualifying strategy. “It’s crucial to arrive with confidence,” he said, underscoring the tight competition within F1 where even a slight miscalculation in performance can be detrimental. He aims to capitalize on the momentum from Canada to enhance his practice sessions and approach qualifying with a fresh mindset.

As the Austrian GP weekend unfolds, all eyes will be on Antonelli, who seeks to build on his momentum and further solidify his position as a promising contender for the future of Formula 1.
