Charlie Eastwood Bolsters Cadillac’s F1 Efforts as FIA WEC Championship Awaits

Bahrain— Charlie Eastwood, the accomplished Irish driver and simulator specialist, is stepping into a dual role with Cadillac’s Formula 1 team while aiming for a second LMGT3 title in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). His recent transition involves extensive commitments across multiple racing series, including the FIA WEC and IMSA, as he supports Cadillac’s ambitious entry into Formula 1.

Eastwood, who has been integral to General Motors’ racing initiatives since March, was quick to secure his position when his contract with Mercedes F1 ended, indicating the efficient organizational structure within GM. “Within 15 minutes of reaching out, I was in an email chain that led to my hiring,” Eastwood stated, emphasizing GM’s proactive approach.

With his experience as a simulator driver at Mercedes, Eastwood faces unique challenges at Cadillac. “At Mercedes, they had multiple titles when I arrived. At Cadillac, we start from scratch, which is both exciting and demanding,” he remarked.

As he prepares for the final round of the WEC season in Bahrain, Eastwood leads the No. 81 TF Sport Z06 LMGT3.R team into a critical race. After securing the ELMS championship last month, he and teammates Rui Andrade and Tom van Rompuy are 24 points from first place in the WEC standings, with 39 points still available in the race.

Eastwood highlighted the competitive nature of the Bahrain circuit: “Its abrasive surface is tough on tires, and the eight-hour format adds strategic complexity.” He expects teams will strategize around tire management and pit decisions, particularly through the day-to-night transition.

“I feel confident in our team’s ability to execute the strategy effectively,” Eastwood said as he looked forward to a championship showdown. “The key challenge will be maintaining tire integrity while avoiding risky moves that could compromise our pace.”

Amidst his competitive pursuits, Eastwood remains open to exploring future opportunities within GM’s diverse racing operations. “I’d love to stay in WEC as my primary focus, but I’m willing to support Cadillac in F1 if that’s where I’m needed,” he concluded.

As the sun sets on the Bahrain International Circuit, all eyes will be on Eastwood, who aims to clinch his first WEC championship and further contribute to Cadillac’s promising foray into Formula 1.
