FIA Suspends Stewards for Controversial Comments Ahead of Canadian Grand Prix

Montreal, Canada – Derek Warwick, a veteran FIA steward and former Formula 1 driver, has been suspended from officiating duties for the Canadian Grand Prix due to recent controversial media comments. The FIA announced Warwick’s temporary suspension after he criticized several current drivers, including Lando Norris, Lance Stroll, and Yuki Tsunoda, in interviews linked to a gambling firm.

Warwick’s remarks also addressed Max Verstappen’s collision with George Russell during the Spanish Grand Prix, where Verstappen received a 10-place grid penalty and three points on his license. The FIA confirmed his absence in a statement, emphasizing that his comments were made without authorization.

George Russell, who claimed pole position for the Canadian GP, expressed support for Warwick, indicating that his comments did not merit more than a one-race suspension. “I think anything more than that would have been a bit OTT,” Russell stated during a post-qualifying press conference. He noted the scrutiny stewards face and pointed out that they are volunteers who engage with media like anyone else in the paddock.

Enrique Bernoldi has been appointed to replace Warwick as a steward, officiating from the Remote Operations Centre in Geneva.

Warwick acknowledged that his comments were ill-advised and has issued an apology. He is expected to return to his duties at the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix.

Key Results:
