Romain Grosjean Set for F1 Return with Haas at Mugello
Romain Grosjean will make his first appearance in a Formula 1 car since the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, participating in a Testing of Previous Car (TPC) session for Haas at Mugello on Friday. This test will see Grosjean pilot the 2023 VF-23, a notable return to the team he raced for from 2016 to 2020.
Grosjean expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “To say I’m excited to get back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car would naturally be an understatement.” He reflected on the almost five-year absence, highlighting the significance of this outing with Haas, especially as many members of his former crew reunite for the day.
Ayao Komatsu, Haas team principal, also conveyed excitement about Grosjean’s return, emphasizing the historical bond they share from their time in F1. “I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome Romain back into a Formula 1 car for the first time in five years… this test at Mugello is of particular significance to us both,” Komatsu said.
The test comes after previous attempts that fell through, including a scheduled session with Mercedes in 2021, which ultimately did not take place. Since leaving F1, Grosjean has been active in IndyCar, competing in 64 races and achieving six podiums with teams such as Dale Coyne Racing and Andretti Global.
Joining Grosjean in this test will be IndyCar veteran James Hinchcliffe, who will also drive the VF-23, creating a feature for F1 TV to air during the upcoming United States Grand Prix weekend.
This return not only marks a personal milestone for Grosjean but also underscores Haas’ ongoing efforts to leverage their TPC program in vehicle development.
