Hamilton Advocates for Greater Driver Representation in F1 Governance

Miami, FL — Lewis Hamilton has intensified calls for the establishment of a union within Formula 1’s Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) to secure a greater influence in shaping race regulations. The seven-time world champion asserts that a formal seat at the decision-making table would empower drivers to advocate for their interests and more effectively contribute to the sport’s evolution.

Hamilton’s remarks come in the wake of recent tensions between drivers and the FIA regarding strict penalties for inappropriate language during press events. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has emphasized a stringent approach, imposing fines ranging from €10,000 to €120,000 for breaches of conduct, including a controversial crackdown on swearing. Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion, was penalized last season for using explicit language during a live press conference in Singapore.

Responding to the robust backlash, Ben Sulayem acknowledged the need for constructive dialogue, stating on social media that he is open to revising these penalties following feedback from drivers worldwide.

In light of these developments, Hamilton remarked, “Ultimately, the GPDA is very unified…. We don’t hold a power seat at the table, and that needs to change in my opinion.” He pointed out that in other sports with established unions, players have a voice in the rules affecting them—something he believes could benefit Formula 1.

Hyundai World Rally Championship driver Adrien Fourmaux recently became the first recipient of the new penalties, fined €10,000 for using inappropriate language during a televised interview at Rally Sweden.

With the Miami Grand Prix approaching, the focus will be not only on the track but also on the dynamics between drivers and governing bodies, as both sides seek to navigate their relationship in pursuit of advancing the sport’s future.
