Mexico City Grand Prix: Hamilton Questions Penalty Amid Controversial Race Dynamics

In a dramatic turn of events during the Mexico City Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton raised significant concerns regarding a 10-second penalty received for track limits violations, drawing attention to perceived inconsistencies in stewarding.

The incident in question occurred after a fierce battle with Max Verstappen. During the race’s early stages, both Verstappen and Charles Leclerc cut Turn 2; however, no penalties were issued. Hamilton capitalized on the chaos, moving into second position after a four-wide entry, while Leclerc briefly rejoined in front before yielding to Lando Norris.

Later, Hamilton received his penalty for unsanctioned off-track excursion at Turn 4. The stewards ruled he had gained a “lasting advantage” by overtaking Verstappen during the maneuver. Hamilton expressed confusion over the ruling, stating, “I was pretty much the same as all the other people around me…” He pointed out that he navigated Turn 2 and Turn 3 correctly while others did not incur penalties for similar infractions.

Additionally, Hamilton highlighted the challenges he faced during the incident, explaining, “I pinched the right front… I couldn’t slow the car down, so I ended up cutting the grass.”

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur echoed Hamilton’s criticisms, emphasizing the disproportionate nature of the penalties. He remarked, “If you consider the global picture, seeing that Max cut the corner before… it’s not very well managed.” Vasseur argued that the 10-second penalty severely impacted Hamilton’s race, dropping him from a competitive third to an eventual eighth place, and questioned the fairness of track limit enforcement in a high-stakes environment.

The discourse surrounding the penalties underscores ongoing challenges in the application of racing regulations, particularly regarding track limits in critical race moments.
