Red Bull Racing Restructures Leadership Amid Ongoing Season Challenges
In a significant shift within Red Bull Racing, Christian Horner has been removed from his roles as team principal and CEO, effective immediately. The decision was announced on Wednesday, marking the end of Horner’s two-decade tenure, during which he guided the team to numerous successes, including four Drivers’ Championships with Max Verstappen.
In place of Horner, Laurent Mekies, who formerly served as the principal of the Racing Bulls team, steps in as Red Bull’s new team chief and CEO. Alan Permane, the former racing director, will succeed Mekies at the Racing Bulls.
Motorsport advisor Helmut Marko issued a statement lauding Horner’s contributions: “Christian and I have worked together very successfully for over 20 years—both in Formula 1 and in Formula 3000. I would like to sincerely thank Christian for that. During this time, we celebrated many outstanding achievements and developed two World Drivers’ Champions.”
Marko remained optimistic about Red Bull’s prospects, stating, “There are still twelve races to go, and we will continue to fight for the Drivers’ Championship as long as it’s mathematically possible.”
Following the announcement, Verstappen expressed gratitude, reflecting on their successful partnership: “From my first race win to four world championships, we have shared incredible successes. Thank you for everything, Christian!” Teammate Yuki Tsunoda echoed similar sentiments, thanking Horner for his guidance and support over the current season.
Currently, Red Bull sits fourth in the constructors’ standings, trailing championship leaders McLaren by 288 points with an uphill battle ahead in the remaining races of the season.
