Colton Herta Joins Cadillac F1 as Test Driver, Future Plans in Limbo
Colton Herta has been appointed as a test driver for the Cadillac Formula 1 team amid ongoing discussions about a potential move to Formula 2. This role marks a significant step for Herta as he aims to enhance his chances of securing a Super License, a crucial requirement for future racing in F1.
Previously associated with Andretti’s F1 entry, Herta was slated as one of the race drivers. However, he fell short of the 40 Super License points required for this season, finishing with 35 points. Consequently, Cadillac has confirmed veteran drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas for the 2026 season.
To bolster his Super License prospects, Herta and TWG Motorsports are exploring racing opportunities in Formula 2 next season. While no firm plans have been established, sources indicate that several F2 teams have shown interest in Herta.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Cadillac Formula 1 team as a test driver,” Herta stated. “This is a dream opportunity… My focus is on giving everything I can to Cadillac F1, helping build a competitive team.”
Cadillac F1 CEO Dan Towriss and team principal Graeme Lowdon highlighted the broader significance of Herta’s role. Lowdon noted, “Colton is an exceptionally talented racer… His experience in top-level American motorsport makes him an ideal fit for this role.”
As Herta seeks to accumulate the necessary Super License points, an F2 program could provide a pathway, though it is not yet confirmed. F2 awards up to 40 points to its championship front-runners, contrasting with the point structure in IndyCar, which Herta currently competes in. Additionally, participating in FP1 sessions for Cadillac can yield Super License points, critical for Herta’s target of reaching 2027 racing eligibility.
With a comprehensive strategy in place, Herta’s contributions as a test driver will not only benefit Cadillac but could also pave the way for future American representation in Formula 1.
