Colton Herta Targets Formula 2 to Secure F1 Future
Colton Herta’s transition to the Formula 1 circuit is gaining momentum, as he embarks on a dual role that includes serving as a test driver for Cadillac while aiming to secure a racing seat in Formula 2. Dan Towriss, of Cadillac, emphasized the importance of Herta’s performance in F2 as an opportunity to showcase his readiness for the F1 stage.
“This is Formula 1, and he needs to show that he’s ready to race on this big stage,” Towriss stated in an interview with RACER. “It’s about learning, showing, and building confidence within the team and management.”
Although Herta’s participation in F2 has not been officially confirmed for the upcoming season, logistics have posed challenges. Towriss noted that aligning the end of the IndyCar season with F2 seat allocations created a complex scenario. “We had to announce our Formula 1 drivers first,” Towriss explained. “Colton’s got big shoes to fill in IndyCar, and synchronizing these events while ensuring F2 opportunities remained available was a delicate process.”
Cadillac team principal Graeme Lowdon reaffirmed that existing F1 drivers, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, are supportive of Herta’s ambitions. “They understand there’s no predetermined route here,” Lowdon said, highlighting the competitive nature of F1. He added, “Everything we do is based on merit, and Colton’s track record speaks for itself.”
As Herta prepares for this crucial phase in his career, both he and Cadillac aim to affirm his capability to claim a permanent seat in Formula 1, with the potential for increased interest in American drivers in the sport.
