Colton Herta to Transition from IndyCar to Formula 2 Ahead of F1 Aspirations

In a strategic move for his racing career, Colton Herta is set to leave IndyCar for Formula 2 in 2026, while also taking on a test driver role with the Cadillac Formula 1 Team. Herta, who requires six Super License points to qualify for F1, will benefit from the competitive landscape of F2, which offers a more rewarding points system compared to IndyCar.

Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports and Cadillac F1, emphasized the importance of Herta’s transition, stating, “This is a nod to showing respect to European open-wheel racing.” Towriss noted that past attempts by IndyCar champions to leap directly to F1 have often fallen short, underscoring the need for drivers to earn their place through experience in the feeder series.

“Herta’s perspective shows the right attitude for an American driver,” he added. Although Herta’s F2 team is not yet confirmed, his commitment to the series indicates a fresh approach to developing American talent for F1.

Towriss elaborated on the required knowledge to compete effectively in F1, saying, “Just understanding the cars, the tires, and the tracks is critical.” He highlighted the challenge faced by U.S. drivers who leave too early without establishing a fan base domestically.

Support for Herta’s transition also comes from team principal Graeme Lowdon, who praised Herta’s humble approach and understanding of the intense competition in F2. “The best people always approach with humility because they believe in their skills,” Lowdon noted. He expressed confidence in Herta’s ability to contribute significantly to the team while respecting the high level of talent he will face.

As Herta prepares for this pivotal phase in his career, the motorsports community awaits further developments on his F2 team and performance, with expectations high for his success on the European stage.
