Simone Resta Joins Mercedes as Deputy Technical Director
Simone Resta has officially joined Mercedes as their new Deputy Technical Director, marking a significant shift for both the individual and the organization. Announced in March 2022, Resta’s relocation from Ferrari was finalized last October, following a brief gardening leave due to an internal arrangement between Mercedes and Ferrari regarding Loic Serra’s transition.
Resta, who boasts a long history with Ferrari since 2013, initially served as a junior designer and progressed to Technical Director roles at Sauber and Haas. His appointment at Mercedes reunites him with James Allison, his former colleague at Ferrari, who now serves as Technical Director. This collaboration is seen as a strategic move to enhance Mercedes’ performance, especially in light of upcoming regulatory changes in Formula One.
In an exclusive interview, Resta emphasized the clear division of responsibilities with Allison: “James focuses on the long-term vision, particularly the 2026 project, while I am dedicated to the immediate and medium-term developments of the vehicle and technical infrastructures.”
The restructuring aligns with Mercedes’ ambition to elevate their technical capabilities. Resta’s experience includes integrating new technologies and refining car development processes, essential ahead of the 2025 regulations.
Key insights from Resta highlight the necessity of adapting to evolving F1 demands to maintain competitiveness. “Our work styles are complementary,” he stated, referencing their historical collaboration. “There is great mutual respect between us, and it is an honor to work alongside a technician of his caliber."
This strategic partnership is expected to strengthen Mercedes’ competitive edge as they prepare for significant challenges ahead in Formula One.
