McLaren’s Lando Norris Discusses Impact of New F1 Film

In a private screening ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, McLaren’s Lando Norris shared his views on the upcoming Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, likening it to the widely acclaimed Netflix series Drive to Survive. Norris indicated that the film presents a "more historical" narrative than the docuseries, which has significantly contributed to F1’s surge in popularity, particularly in the U.S. market.

Following the viewing, drivers expressed a largely positive reaction. However, the film’s "Hollywood" flair drew mixed sentiments, with Nico Hulkenberg and Ollie Bearman noting that while it highlights the sport’s growing profile, it departs from the raw behind-the-scenes realism captured in Drive to Survive, which debuted in March 2019 and is currently in its seventh season.

Formula 1 has benefited greatly from Drive to Survive, boasting three U.S.-based Grands Prix and significantly increased viewership, particularly among the crucial 18 to 29 demographic. Despite some criticism within the paddock, including Norris’s comments on "made-up scripts," he acknowledges the series’ merits in showcasing the inner workings of the sport.

Norris remarked, "Both are good for different reasons," emphasizing that while the documentary provides an in-depth look at team dynamics and nuances of race weekends, the film represents a broader appeal enhanced by major film stars. He stated, "I just find it cool that we’re in a movie… it’s a much bigger stage."

Reflecting on the film’s potential impact, Norris believes it could resonate for decades, stating, "It’s something that in 20 years your kids can still watch, and it’ll still be kind of cool." He appreciates the film’s exploration of driver personalities and team cultures, suggesting that it offers invaluable insights into the sport’s competitive landscape.

As the Monaco Grand Prix approaches, the motorsport community awaits further insights from both the film and the race weekend itself.
