Forbes Releases 2025 Highest-Paid Athletes List: Hamilton and Verstappen Shine

In the latest Forbes report on athlete earnings, Formula 1’s stars Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have solidified their positions among the highest-paid athletes globally. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, ranks 22nd, tied with boxer Canelo Alvarez, with earnings of $80 million over the past year. Verstappen follows closely in 24th place with $78 million, just ahead of renowned footballer Neymar Jr.

The earnings breakdown reveals distinct paths for both drivers. Hamilton’s income primarily stems from off-track endeavors, securing $20 million from endorsements and investments, while earning $60 million from racing activities. In contrast, Verstappen’s financial success is largely derived from his Red Bull Racing contract, contributing approximately $72 million to his total, with an additional $6 million from commercial deals.

Forbes’ list is dominated by athletes from traditional ball sports, with Cristiano Ronaldo leading the chart for the third consecutive year at $275 million. NBA star Stephen Curry ranks second with $156 million, followed by heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury at $146 million. Notably, the lower end of the spectrum highlights a significant shift; New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson, earning $53.6 million, would have placed sixth eight years prior.

"For athletes, securing a spot on this exclusive list is becoming increasingly challenging," Forbes comments, underscoring the competitiveness of sports earnings in today’s landscape.
