Laurent Mekies Appointed Red Bull Racing CEO Following Christian Horner’s Departure
In a significant shift within Red Bull Racing’s leadership, Laurent Mekies has been appointed as the new CEO and team principal, effective July 9, 2023, succeeding Christian Horner. Mekies, previously the chief of Racing Bulls, was recognized for his role in the team’s operations and is expected to leverage his extensive technical background to bolster Red Bull’s competitive edge.
Mekies’ career trajectory began with Arrows before progressing to Minardi, where he served as race engineer for multiple drivers, and later, chief engineer during the transition to Toro Rosso. In 2014, he joined the FIA as safety director, escalating to deputy race director by 2017. He transitioned to Ferrari as sporting director in 2018, later ascending to deputy team principal and racing director until his departure in 2023.
Sky Sports analyst Martin Brundle emphasized Mekies’ capabilities, stating, “We are seeing people like this more and more now becoming a team boss.” He remarked on the successes of similar figures in the sport, citing Andrea Stella at McLaren and James Vowles at Williams.
Brundle also pointed out that Jonathan Wheatley, who aspired for the role, has moved to Sauber, further indicating the shifting dynamics within the Red Bull group.
In his first statements, Mekies expressed respect for Red Bull’s established team, recognizing its talent pool. “It’s a privilege to join the team. The focus will really be making sure that all the talented people here have what they need to perform at their best,” he stated.
Looking ahead, Mekies acknowledged the significant regulatory changes in Formula 1 anticipated for 2026, emphasizing the importance of collaboration amid the introduction of Red Bull’s own power unit. “It’s going to be an incredible challenge… we will tackle this challenge together,” he added, underscoring the commitment to maintaining Red Bull’s status at the forefront of motorsports.
