Verstappen Addresses Perez’s Comments Ahead of Austrian Grand Prix

Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, Max Verstappen responded to recent remarks by his former Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, regarding their past team dynamic. In a podcast appearance on Desde el Paddock, Perez suggested that Verstappen often represses his feelings until they manifest in on-track conflicts, citing incidents from the 2022 Monaco and Brazilian Grands Prix.

Perez specifically noted, "Max had an issue with what happened in Monaco… He kept it to himself and brought it up six or eight months later." The Mexican driver indicated that this has been a pattern for Verstappen, particularly during significant moments in their careers.

In response, Verstappen maintained a diplomatic stance, stating, "I think how you word it is not how he meant it. I have a great relationship with Checo. We’ve always been great teammates." He further emphasized mutual respect, adding, “Whatever is written in the media… I know who Checo is, and we have a great relationship.” Verstappen also mentioned a personal commitment to gift Perez one of his helmets, recalling that Perez had given him one with a thoughtful message.

Despite any previous tensions, both drivers have enjoyed a remarkable partnership, finishing first and second in the 2023 Drivers’ Championship—an unprecedented achievement for Red Bull Racing. However, Perez faced challenges in the 2024 season, culminating in his replacement by Liam Lawson for 2025 due to a series of disappointing results.

As the motorsport community gears up for the Austrian Grand Prix, the dynamics between these drivers remain a focal point of interest, highlighting the complexities of teammate relationships within a competitive environment.
